Liverpool vs Brentford Preview: Salah & Robertson Bid Farewell

Liverpool close the 2026 season on May 24 at Anfield vs. Brentford. Not only is it the final match of the season, but it will mark the final appearance of Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson in a Liverpool uniform. The Reds have a small bit of work to do in the match to secure Champions League qualification, but their place for next season is all but assured. Arne Slot also addressed Salah’s much-publicized “heavy metal football comments.

 A Legendary Farewell.

Both Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah will conclude their nine years of service to the club on May 24. Special tributes are planned before and after the match. The club has produced tribute videos for both players, which can be seen here and here while Robertson and Salah both shared farewell messages to the fans.

“The club means everything,” Salah said. “The people mean everything, the city means everything. I will always love this club. I will always support it. My kids will always support it and even when I talk to them now, I tell them like, we’re leaving Liverpool, they say, ‘Well, we’re going to support the club even when you leave. I say, ‘We’re not going to support my new club?’ They say, ‘No, we love Liverpool. We’re going to support Liverpool. We’re not going to support anything else.’

“I am happy I’ve had nine years and I leave with no regrets, no bitterness,” Robertson  said.

“This club is unique. When you step away, it is always going to be difficult but it is also about finding happiness elsewhere, which a lot of people have shown can be done.“For me, some (who left) maybe felt they still had more to give to Liverpool. I look back on my nine years and I know I have given absolutely everything.” 

Unfinished Business 

With all the emotion surrounding this game, the Reds still have to play well to qualify for a Champions League spot next season. The easiest path is to garner a win or a draw, but if the Reds lose, Bournemouth would have to overcome a six-goal difference vs. Nottingham Forest. Liverpool hope to have both Alisson and Alexander Isak available for selection. Brentford’s Igor Thiago is second only to Erling Haaland in EPL goals this year with 22  and former Red’s goalie Caoimhin Kelleher is 4th in the EPL with 103 saves this season.

Causing A Stir

Salah caused a stir earlier in the week by saying that Liverpool should have played more of Jurgen Klopp’s heavy metal football this season. Slot says that Salah’s comments are not a distraction for the club.

“I don't know if it had impact on the group. But what I've seen is that the team trained really well this week and we hope to continue really well in the upcoming two days so we're in the best possible way prepared. I think Mo and I have both the same interest. We want the best for this club, we want the club to be as successful as possible. We were both part of giving our fans their first league title again after five years. But we're also aware – all of us – that we didn't bring the same level this season. What we want, what he wants, what I want is the club to be as successful as we were last season. That is where my main focus is on now, because the game on Sunday could give us a really good base going into next season. That is where I, we should focus on.”

LFC Globe Verdict

There is a lot more than football surrounding this game, but the goal is clear. Secure UCL football first and then celebrate the legacies of Robertson and Salah. Even though the Reds don’t need a win to qualify, three points would be a momentum boost heading into next season.
