LFC Globe is on site in Nashville, Tennessee, to provide live coverage of the Reds' upcoming preseason friendly with Sunderland on July 25th. One of the many events leading up to the match was club legend and ambassador Ian Rush visiting Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital in Nashville to visit with patients there. LFC Globe caught up with LFC Legend Ian Rush after the event for an exclusive one-on-one interview. Below are the questions and answers from the Merseyside legend.
Question 1: What makes Liverpool Football Club so special, and describe your role as a club ambassador?
Answer: “Liverpool is a special club. We are the people’s club. We are one big family. My job as club ambassador is to travel around the world and leave a legacy. We try to help the people who are maybe not as fortunate as us and put smiles on people's faces. If we’ve done that, we have done our job.”
Question 2: What effect does it have on the club when Liverpool players have success in the World Cup?
Answer: “It helps the club a lot with recognition, but it also makes for a longer season with those players. They only have two to three weeks off, and then they have to come back to Liverpool again. It’s great for the club to have two players in the World Cup final and we are looking forward to seeing what they do when they come back to Liverpool.”
Question 3: You are the club’s all-time leading scorer. What does that mean to you?
Answer: “It means everything to me. I never thought when I was a kid that I would be Liverpool’s record goalscorer. It’s something very special to me and something I’ll never forget. Mo Salah is the closest to me, but he’s 90-odd behind and no longer with the club. Liverpool have had so many special players over the years; it’s special to be on that list.”
Question 4: What are your early impressions of new boss Andoni Iraola?
Answer: “He did really well at Bournemouth. Coming to Liverpool is a big step up. He’s going to change the way of playing, more of a high press. We are really looking forward to him (coaching at Liverpool)”
Question 5: What advice would you give young players coming up who want to be a star football player in the future?
Answer: “As a Striker, I would say never be afraid to miss. When you do score, people forget about the ones that you miss”
