Liverpool got off to a perfect start, cashing in their first real chance. After a Reds corner was only half-cleared, Ryan Gravenberch played the ball to  Hugo Ekitiké in front of goal, and the striker converted within the opening five minutes.

Mo Salah made a nice run down the wing to earn a corner in the 15th, and after a Hammer clearance, they nearly struck on a counterattack, but Milos Kerkez stuck a foot in to disrupt it.

The visitors continued to grow in the game, but it was Gravenberch who forced a save in the 20th minute. The game had a nice flow to it  as Liverpool earned a trio of corners and the captain, Virgil van Dijk, headed home the third one off a corner from Szoboszlai in the 24th minute

Alisson nearly committed a howler at the half hour mak, but he recovered to keep West Ham off the board. Gravenberch also gave away a ball in the penalty area, but the defence stood tall. West Ham continued to get in behind Liverpool players.

Liverpool scored a third set-piece goal just before the half, as Alexis Mac Allister finished off an Ekitiké pass following a corner.
