Liverpool finished fourth with 76 points from 38 matches: 21 wins, 13 draws and four defeats. The Reds scored 67 league goals and conceded 28, a goal difference of +39. Thirteen draws help explain the shape of that finish. Four defeats is a small part of a 38-game season, but avoiding defeat and collecting three points are different achievements. That is the useful distinction when looking back at the campaign: a good defensive record and a prolific new striker still left work to do in turning close matches into wins. This is our interpretation of the table, rather than a quoted judgement from the league.
Torres: an immediate change in the attack
Torres joined from Atlético Madrid in July 2007 and made his competitive Liverpool debut away to Aston Villa on 11 August. His first official Liverpool goal followed against Chelsea. On 8 April 2008, Liverpool beat Arsenal 4–2 at Anfield and progressed 5–3 on aggregate.
