Liverpool vs Tottenham Preview: Robertson Returns to Anfield in EFL Cup

Liverpool begin their EFL Cup journey on September 15th vs familiar foe Tottenham Hotspur. Old friend Andy Robertson will make his return to Anfield for a hungry Spurs side that have gotten off to a slow start in the EPL.

Iraola Wants To Win

Some media and fans view the Carabao Cup as a lesser competition. Not so for Andoni Iraola, but the boss did hint at some lineup changes.

“We want to win the game, and we want to play well,” he said. "I think it [the workload] has to affect, definitely, because it's the third game. It's the worst scenario – it's game, two days, game, two days, game. You can decide and put the same players [in] every game. The problem is there is going to be a moment where they are going to be very tired, and there is more risk of injury. But that's why we cannot say it doesn't work for anyone. There are players who play every three days, they have no issues, they are very robust, they can accept it, their performances don't change too much. And there are other players where the risk is bigger, the performances are different.”

Struggling Spurs

Spurs remain goalless in four EPL games this season, but thanks to a strong defense anchored by Liverpool legend Andy Robertson at left back, they have secured a pair of 0-0 draws and are just above the relegation line. Robertson has started all four games for the Spurs, and while Robertson has so far remained silent on his return to Anfield, Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi has sung his praises.

“Andy is someone I’ve admired for a number of years, and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership, and mentality to our team. He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch. I cannot wait to start working with him and seeing the positive impact he will have on everyone around him.”

Injury Update

It has been revealed that Joe Gomez is fully fit and is likely to start vs. Spurs. Conor Bradley is progressing well, but his return is still a way off. Giovanni Leonni and Federico Chiesa are expected to return in late September, while Hugo Ekitike will be sidelined until at least December 2026.

LFC Globe Verdict

Even though there will be wholesale lineup changes, I expect the Reds to win. Spurs are struggling on offense, and even the Liverpool subs can put the ball in the back of the net. I think the performance against Fulham was an aberration, and I see a 3-1 win for the Reds.
