Liverpool got off to a bright start within the first 10 minutes, but Cody missed a golden opportunity high. Spurs produced a threat moments later, forcing Alisson to save. Alexis Mac Allister showed nice footwork to draw a foul in a dangerous spot, and Dominik Szoboszlai paid it off with a free kick strike for a 1-0 Liverpool lead in the 18th minute.

The Reds kept pushing for a second goal, as they dominated possession, but they overcomplicated things at times in the final third. 

Rio Ngumoha continued to play well in his first EPL start as he had a shot blocked in the 34th minute, and Gakpo rattled the post in the 35th. Liverpool nearly scored a second goal when Virgil van Dijk played a dangerous ball across the box, but no one could get on the end of it, and Liverpool had to settle for a 1-0 lead
