Virgil van Dijk: career background and Liverpool milestones, with official sources and coverage through July 2023.
The Southampton agreement
Liverpool announced an agreement to sign Netherlands defender Virgil van Dijk from Southampton on 27 December 2017. The move was scheduled for the transfer window opening on 1 January 2018, with the No.4 shirt assigned on arrival. He was 26 at the time. Read the club’s original announcement.
The captaincy appointment
On 31 July 2023, Liverpool announced Van Dijk as the club’s new captain following Jordan Henderson’s departure. The same announcement recorded 222 Liverpool appearances and winner’s medals in seven different competitions up to that point. These are July 2023 milestones, not his present-day appearance or trophy totals. Read the official captaincy announcement.
A profile with a defined scope
This page explains the Dutch centre-back’s arrival and captaincy appointment. Current team selection, fitness and later milestones require separately dated updates; a fan choosing him as captain in an XI card does not announce an official matchday decision.
