Liverpool look to climb the EPL standings as they travel to Brentford on October 17th. While the Reds looked impressive in a 6-3 win over LASK in Champions League action, a 3-0 loss to Manchester City has dropped them all the way to 9th on the table, so three points, though difficult to attain on the road, are a must.
Injury Update
Cody Gakpo, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Alexander Isak all missed the LASK match due to minor injuries suffered while on international duty. Andoni Iraola left the door open for all three stars to see time on the pitch, but with the quick turnaround time between matches (72 hours), he adds that it may be too quick to be fit.
“We have to wait and see. I think it’s still very early, but the same way I said they are not available for the previous games, I leave the chance open this time, yes,” he said. “In this period especially, when we are basically playing every three days – almost less than three days – you need more players. That’s why we changed the team a little bit yesterday.
“We will need to change again at the weekend, we will need to change again when we face Villarreal in another three days.”
Ryan Gravenberch will miss the contest due to a red card picked up against City.
Bee Prepared
Brentford are unbeaten in the EPL this season and fourth on the table with 2 wins and 4 draws. Overall, they have not lost an EPL match in the last 8 fixtures dating back to last season, which is the club’s best run since 2006-07. Brentford are a defensive-minded squad, as former Liverpool player Caoimhín Kelleher has only allowed six goals in his net all season while making 22 saves. Brentford’s scoring has been spread out as 9 different players have found the back of the net. German midfielder Kevin Schade leads the way with 3 goals so far this season.
Other Stats
Should Bradley Barcola score another hat-trick vs Brentford, he would be the first Liverpool player to do so in back-to-back games since Jack Balmer in 1946. Virgil van Dijk is in line to captain Liverpool for the 200th time in his Liverpool career. Liverpool fans can expect the Reds to score at least one goal in all but one of their previous meetings. In fact, in the last six meetings between the two sides, they have combined to score an average of 4.4 goals per match.
LFC Globe Verdict
This seems like a tipping point of Livpool’s EPL season. Brentford are unbeaten and will be tough, particularly at home. I think that had Gravenberch not been sent off vs. City, Liverpool would have at least gotten a result. So the Reds are still a very talented club that could make a run despite their current position on the table. Beating Brent will go a long way to establishing that fact. I expect a high-scoring contest with Liverpool edging Brentford 3-2.
