Liverpool hope to get over the line for Champions League qualification when they host Chelsea at Anfield on May 9th. The Blues have been struggling, but Liverpool knows that in this roller coaster of a season, the Reds know that they will have to be at their best to pick up three points.Liverpool are still dealing with key injuries, so we will dive into the latest news on that front plus provide a look at the opposition and a key player who has to have a big game for the home side
Injury Update
Liverpool still have several players injured and it was a mixed bag concerning their availability for this fixture..The good news is Giorgi Mamardahvili and Alexander Isak are back in training with the team and available for selection. Alisson Becker and Mohamed Salah have not resumed training yet, but Arne Slot says both are “Close” and are in contention to play next week. Ibrahima Konate will be available after missing practice for personal reasons and Milos Kerkez has been battling an illness and his avalibility will be a match-time decision.
Singing The Blues
Chelsea was once in a battle with Liverpool for the final Champions League spot, but the Blues have lost six Premier League matches in a row. They have also gone through several managerial changes but current boss Calum McFarlane seems to have righted the ship as he has Chelsea in the FA Cup finals.
Joao Pedro is one of the many talented players who still make Chelsea a dangerous side. He has 20 goals and 9 assists this season to lead the club. Enzo Fernandez has 13 goals and Cole Pamer has netted 10 so far.
A Word From The Captain
Mohamed Salah told the media this week that the bond in the dressing room between the players was “changing.” Captain Virgil van Dijk acknowledged tough times for the club, but says they have a duty to the fans to finish the season strong.
"We have a duty to perform whenever we play for this club, but especially at Anfield, and we are all determined to give you guys something to enjoy and to shout about on Saturday,” he said. “"That is extremely frustrating for everyone associated with the club because, as we all know, consistency is the hallmark of successful teams. We keep going, though. We keep working and we stick together.”
Predicted Starting XI
This lineup is based on the assumption that Isak and Mamardashvili will be ready to play. If not, Freddie Woodman will fill and Cody Gakpo will continue in those spots. Check out the full lineup here.
LFC Globe Verdict
All the signs point to a Liverpool victory. The Reds still have to be solid in the back and garner strong play from Virgil van Dijk because Chelsea can score at a high rate, but I see a rather comfortable 3-1 win for the Reds.
