The Reds needed just a score-draw to qualify for the quarter-finals, however they put on an exemplary European away performance to run out 3-1 winners.

Sadio Mane opened the scoring for Liverpool, with his clever swivel and dinked shot deceiving the entire Bayern backline.

The hosts pulled one back before the break, but the Reds managed to take hold of the tie once more with 20 minutes to go.

Virgil van Dijk towered beyond everyone to nod Liverpool 2-1 ahead, whilst a brilliant pass from Mohamed Salah to Mane saw him head home in the final ten minutes to seal victory.

It was a fine display from Liverpool who needed to deliver after criticism for their away record in their last five European games away from Anfield.

Van Dijk was his usual imperious best, keeping Robert Lewandowski and co to just one shot on target all game - as well as nodding the Reds ahead.

The Dutchman said: "It is very important and it feels amazing to score. It is a great evening. We knew it would be tough as they have a great team with fantastic players.

"We were unlucky on their equaliser but we got the job done and we're into the last eight."
