Liverpool take on Wolves in the FA Cup on Monday night and Jurgen Klopp is expected to make a number of changes to his starting eleven.
The Reds have endured a busy festive period and whilst coming out largely unscathed, the squad are undoubtedly feeling the after-effects of an intense fixture schedule.
Klopp explained the importance of making changes ahead of Liverpool’s trip to the Molineux, insisting they need to do so to “make sure we can play with the right intensity”.
Liverpool continue to be without Joe Gomez (leg) and Joel Matip (collarbone), despite both making big strides to return to full training later this month, but Klopp is still able to make some changes to his back-line.
“He [Mignolet] will play, of course,” the boss said.
“I can say Alberto will play as well, there is no doubt about that. He has to play, that’s clear.”
Trent Alexander-Arnold could also be given a rest in place of Rafa Camacho or 16-year-old starlet Ki-Jana Hoever.
With centre-back options limited in the absence of Gomez and Matip, it will be interesting to see who Klopp opts for in the heart of defence.
“We need to be creative! Or we play the two [van Dijk and Lovren] again. If not, we have to be creative—we’ll see what we do. We won’t sign a centre-half for one game!” he said.
A possible option for the Reds is midfielder Fabinho dropping in to defence, with the Brazilian having briefly featured there during pre-season.
“Adam is actually in an outstanding shape. In training it was close, do we start him or not,” he said.
“Adam is a player who always wants to, he’d play four games a day if he could. He’s in the best moment since I know him.”
Divock Origi could be called up on to fill the last spot in just his second start of the campaign, having scored the winner in the Merseyside derby as a substitute before getting an assist in a start against Burnley in December.
Much will depend on the system Klopp uses on the night, with the versatility of players like Keita, Lallana and Shaqiri allowing the boss to deploy a range of formations.
Predicted Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Mignolet, Camacho, Fabinho, Lovren, Moreno, Milner, Keita, Lallana, Shaqiri, Sturridge, Origi.
