Liverpool earned their first victory of 2019 with a 1-0 over Brighton on Saturday as they took another step in the title race.

With Tottenham and not in action until later this weekend, Jurgen Klopp's side had the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table to seven points.

A penalty in the second-half was enough for them to claim all three points against Chris Hughton's side at the Amex.

The Reds had suffered two consecutive defeats at the hands of Man City and to start this month, meaning victory was imperative to regain their winning momentum from last month's 100 per cent record.

After a game devoid of many chances, Jurgen Klopp admitted: "It wasn't an opera of football but it was a really nice song" - later acknowledging that the result was all that really mattered.

The Liverpool squad were all aware of the importance to get back to winning ways, with highlighting critics that questioned the Reds' mentality after two defeats on the bounce.

“No matter what every game is important for us, but especially this game,” he said.

“We knew we needed a win to get the momentum back and show that we are a really top-quality side and that's what we've done, especially as it's a tough place to come.

“Questions were probably asked about our mentality and how we would bounce back from a defeat because we hadn't experienced it so far, and I think it was important for us to show everyone that we are a top-quality side and to bounce back and get the win.”

The rest of the squad echoed the right-back's thoughts, including , who posted on social media: "Back on track to remove those L's from our 'last 5' form. Thanks for the support #YNWA."

Up next for the Reds are two fixtures against Crystal Palace and , games in which they are expected to come out on top and gain three points apiece.
