Liverpool are looking to add a centre-back and a wide-forward to their squad as they enter the final three weeks of the transfer window.

Jurgen Klopp ordinarily concludes his transfer business before the start of the season, but circumstances this year have dictated more complicated dealings.

Kostas Tsimikas from Olympiacos is Liverpool's only senior signing this summer, whilst Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana both departed after six years at the club.

There has been talk of interest in Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago, but despite strong rumours, a deal has not yet materialised.

A prospective deal for the Spaniard appears dependant on Gini Wijnaldum. The 29-year-old has been linked with Ronald Koeman's Barcelona as he enters the final twelve months of his contract.

The Dutchman is now said to be staying at the club, with Sky Sports claiming he "wants to stay at the club," after a "productive conversation" with Klopp, with a contract extension now being mooted.

Reliable Liverpool journalist James Pearce has also added his thoughts on the situation, writing: "Klopp wouldn't have played him [Gini] if he thought he had one eye on moving to Barca."

Some reports have suggested the Reds are still pursuing the signing of Thiago, even if Wijnaldum were to stay, with journalist Fabrizio Romano claiming Klopp is "still pushing" for the deal.

But according to Pearce, whilst the club "are still in the market for a couple more signings," midfield is an area which isn't being actively considered.

Writing in the Athletic, Pearce said: "Another senior centre-back and a wide attacker are the two biggest priorities."

He added that despite reports claiming the Reds are in discussion with their German counterparts, they are "yet to open talks with Bayern Munich for the Spanish midfielder".

There haven't been many credible reports linking Liverpool with players in other positions, although Watford winger Ismaila Sarr was tentatively linked early on in the window.

Liverpool's reluctance in the transfer market appears to be a combination of two uncertainties: the coronavirus pandemic's strain on finances, and potential departures for their fringe players.

The latter has proved difficult with no suitors coming forward yet. But Pearce writes Liverpool's transfer business "will depend on the amount of cash they can generate from sales."

Rhian Brewster's name has been in the papers with Liverpool reportedly open to selling the 20-year-old, dependant on a buy-back clause put in his contract.

The Reds are said to be looking for £20 million for the striker, who has attracted interest from various Premier League clubs after his successful loan spell with Swansea City last season.

"As for [Rhian] Brewster, his future will be sorted soon. Liverpool are considering their options," Pearce wrote.

Another player the Reds could part ways with to raise transfer funds is Marko Grujic, who spent last season on loan at Hertha Berlin and is far behind the pecking order in midfield.

But according to the midfielder's agent, Fali Ramadani, "Liverpool want to keep Marko," adding: "That could change in January at the earliest."

If true, it suggests Klopp is happy with his midfield options for now, with the likes of Curtis Jones and Marko Grujic able to fill in following Lallana's departure and support the Reds' more senior midfielders.

Liverpool are likely to be tested with offers for Grujic, and it remains to be seen whether they change their stance on the 24-year-old.

There has been a lot of bluster without action during the window so far. But with just three weeks remaining, and reports claiming a possibility of two transfers, the Reds could be likely to make their moves.
