Liverpool 1-1 Napoli
‣ 0-1: Dries Mertens (21′)
‣ 1-1: Dejan Lovren (65′)
Napoli began the game in a defensive set-up as they looked to contain a quick Liverpool start, with the Reds continuing to probe at the Serie A side’s defence.
The Reds fell behind just minutes later as Dries Mertens beat the offside trap and finished with an excellent sliced effort past Alisson to make it 1-0 to the visitors.
Despite VAR being involved twice to check for a potential foul on Virgil van Dijk and an offside in the build-up, the goal stood as Klopp’s side looked to up their tempo and draw level.
Things didn’t seem to click into place for the Reds in the first-half as they appeared to be short of ideas and struggling to find any rhythm against a solid Napoli defence, with Klopp fuming at his side on the touchline.
Salah had a first-time effort from the edge of the box saved before Oxlade-Chamberlain found Firmino at the far post with a fantastic in-swinging cross, only for the Reds forward to head wide of the near post.
The Reds’ pressure paid off minutes later as Dejan Lovren snuck in unmarked from a Milner corner and headed home past Alex Meret, who could only watch as the ball went past him.
With a little under fifteen minutes to go, Trent Alexander-Arnold came on for Milner and slotted in at right-back as Klopp encouraged his side to attack from the right.
Liverpool dominated possession after scoring their leveller, however, Carlo Ancelotti’s side defended admirably and kept them at bay with Liverpool failing to create any clear-cut chances for the rest of the match.
With Salzburg beating Genk 4-1 in the other Group E fixture of the night, Liverpool will need to avoid defeat against the Austrian side next month to progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League.
